Friends have set up a ChipIn Fund for Stewie's Vet bills. You can donate by clicking HERE.

UPDATE 1/23/12: Stewie is in Sacramento at VCA. Stewie is having tests until 4pm. They are administering a dose of chemo today. He has a heart murmur so they are looking at that as well. They want him to have 13 doses of radiation. They have given an estimate of around $8k. He is WORTH EVERY PENNY! The vet told Erik that usually the sinus cancer is localized although it is lymph in nature. They are checking to see if it has spread. Let's hope that it has not and we can get him into remission with this plan! Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers. Just need for Erik to be able to get home safely tonight as it is looking like her will be in Sacramento until about 5 pm.

O
n Christmas morning Stewie was taken to the Animal Emergency Center. His right eye was very swollen and almost distended. We were told that it is either an abscess or a tumor. The surgery was done for the abscess. The vet did not see as much discharge as he would have liked to see, so he proceeded with x-rays. The radiologist has read the x-rays and feels that there is a mass behind Stewie's eye near his sinuses. He was given a steroid injection to try to help with the inflammation.

The next day we visited Stewie's regular vet, Dr. Chuck Andrus at Fairgrounds Animal Hospital. He has Stewie on an aggressive round of antibiotics in the hopes that this is still an infection. Stewie's blood work showed a high normal white cell count. This gives us a little hope.

Stewie really needs to have a CT scan of his head to know for sure what is going on.

UPDATE  He has a grade 2-3 heart murmer...I don't think the murmer is that bad... I am sure the cardiologist would have stopped the CT if it was bad... They said that small parts lit up with the contrast. She cannot tell if it is a tumor or a compressed abscess. There is some bone destruction... I told her about his viral infection that he had for over 2 months... I am really really hoping that that is the culprit and that it is just the abscess... he will lose his eye either way.

UPDATE: So, the CT scan has revealed a mass behind Stewie's eye and into his sinus. We are waiting for cytology results to determine what type of mass this is. At this point, we have no idea whether it is operable or not. Please pray that it is and that this boy is not in imminent danger. He is still acting like himself, but there is a lot of pressure in his head. They have given him Metacam to keep him comfortable. We will know more tomorrow, we hope. Thanks for your support.

If it is operable, the surgery will cost about $3500.

UPDATE:
Inconclusive Results and the Call from an Angel
So Thursday, we got word the the cytology results came back inconclusive... back to square one.

This is the same day that the Reno Gazette Journal ran a story about Stewie being sick. This is when I received the call from an ANGEL! Mary Jo Bennett called to let me know that her son, with Eye Care for Animals here in Reno, might be willing to take a look at Stewie.

I got a call from Jennifer, the marketing and PR person for Eye Care for Animals. They were willing to take a look at Stewie to see if they could help. They also let me know that any exams or treatment that they could give would be at no charge. This is WONDERFUL news! Stewie went in for the exam today.

STEWIE DOES HAVE CANCER. We are not sure wat type of if anything can be done. They will be performing a surgical biopsy on Tuesday to get the definitive answers we need. Then we will know what direction we need t go and if they can do the surgery on Stewie.

If they have to send us somewhere else, the treatments will become very costly. Thanks for your support and love for this gentle giant. Without all of you, we would not have a chance at all!

We thank you so much for your prayers and support. We will try to keep this site updated, but please follow Stewie on Facebook for the fastest updates.

Thank You.

On August 28, 2010 at the Nevada Humane Society, Mymains Stewart Gilligan was measured in an attempt to break the World Record for the World's Longest Domestic Cat. On that day, Stewie measured in at a whopping 48.5 inches. There were several witnesses on hand to give their statements. Dr. Judy Byarlay certified the measurement and our evidence was then submitted to the fine folks at Guinness World Records (tm).

On October 12, we received an email from Guinness confirming that they had awarded the world record to Stewie. We received the certificate on October 14, 2010.

In June of 2011, Stewie was certified as a Therapy Cat. He has been spending time with the folks at Regent Care in Reno. We hope to someday take Stewie to visit the children at St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
